The fundamentals

The fundamentals are necessary to build a foundation, and bridge advanced movement with correct technique.
- Protect yourself at all times - Keep your hands at eye level, palms facing each side of your jaw, and elbows tight to the body when not punching. This stance effectively protects the body and allows for blocking punches up top, except when ducking or slipping, which requires practice. A high guard Will always keep you in position to counter punch!
- Keep your chin tucked- It’s a discipline in itself. When you’re avoiding a punch, there’s a tendency to raise your chin in the air. A shot landed on the chin can get you hurt or knocked out. During shadow boxing, it’s crucial to keep your chin down and hands up.
- Fighting stance- Adopting a fighting stance involves three variations: open, closed, and mid-range. In the mid-range position, approximately 60% of your weight rests on the back foot, with the heel slightly elevated. The lead foot, typically the left, is positioned in front of the right foot to jab, and the back hand, often the right (power punch), extends fully for maximum impact. Pivoting the back foot and turning into the punch with the right hand delivers power while maintaining balance, followed by returning the hands back to position.
The Counterpunch
I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion’.” –
